Often the first step

Preliminary Ecological Appraisal, the right first step.

A desk study and site survey that maps the habitats on your site, flags any protected species risks and tells you exactly which further surveys, if any, you need.

How it works

Three steps to a clear answer.

A PEA early on means no surprises later, and it can double as your BNG baseline.

Do I need a PEA?

Most sites with any natural habitat do.

Send us the site address and we'll tell you, free of charge.

Usually needed

  • New homes or commercial development
  • Sites with trees, hedgerows, ponds or grassland
  • Projects that need a BNG baseline

Probably not needed

  • Internal works only
  • Sites covered by a recent appraisal

Questions we're often asked

Can a PEA be done in winter?

Yes, though some plants and signs are harder to see. We'll tell you if anything needs a follow-up visit in season.

Will I need more surveys afterwards?

Only if the appraisal finds a real risk. If it does, we explain why and when they can be done.

Can the habitat survey count towards BNG?

Yes. Done to UKHab with condition assessments, it can form your BNG baseline and save a second visit.
